ENGLEWOOD — A Bergen County man has been sentenced to 60 months in prison for his role in a scheme to collect refunds from false tax returns.
Authorities say the scheme used stolen personal information, including names and Social Security numbers of adult and pediatric cancer patients.
Twenty-nine-year-old Jason Eaton of Englewood pleaded guilty in November to conspiracy to file false claims against the United States and to commit credit card fraud. At sentencing Monday in U.S. District Court in Newark, he also was ordered to pay nearly $300,000 in restitution.
Prosecutors say he and others used names and Social Security numbers stolen from medical records at hospitals and government offices to file false federal income tax returns that claimed refunds and used counterfeit identification documents to cash the checks.
