EAST BRUNSWICK — A New Jersey man implicated in a loansharking operation has admitted beating a debtor who failed to pay back an illegal, high-interest loan.

Anthony Cariello of East Brunswick pleaded guilty Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Trenton to an extortion conspiracy charge.

Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 24. The 33-year-old could face up to 20 years in prison, although actual sentence is likely to be less under federal sentencing guidelines.

Prosecutors say Cariello went to Monmouth County in March 2006 to collect repayment of a loan. When the debtor refused to pay, Cariello and another man kicked and beat him.

The debtor then gave Cariello approximately $900 in cash, and soon made another cash payment of approximately $1,200.
