HILLSBOROUGH — In 2009, David Bednar allegedly set fire to a home on Fox Chase Run thinking it was the house of his ex-girlfriend’s new beau, according to authorities.

It wasn’t. The boyfriend lived in the house next door.

A Somerset County grand jury Wednesday indicted the 20-year-old Bednar on an aggravated arson charge, which could mean five to 10 years of jail time for the Hillsborough man if he is convicted, according to Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey Soriano.

The fire occurred around 6 a.m. on Sept. 20, 2009, while the homeowner was inside, authorities said.

Soriano said Bednar started the fire by pouring gasoline on the home’s exterior gas meter. The homeowner and neighbors were able to extinguish the flames before they spread, Soriano said.

Bednar had been heartbroken over a breakup with his girlfriend, Soriano said, and the man allegedly set the fire in retaliation.
