NEWARK — Two Newark residents stopped for not wearing seat belts were subsequently arrested for having 520 grams of cocaine in their late-model Mercedes Benz, police said.
Thomas Long, 35, and Kwanza Johnson, 31, were charged with a number of narcotics offenses and motor vehicle violations, said Newark police spokesman Detective Hubert Henderson.
Detectives from the Gang Enforcement Division, in an unmarked car, noticed the driver of the Mercedes wasn’t wearing his seat belt and pulled the vehicle over near the intersection of 14th Avenue and South 18th Street, Henderson said.
During the traffic stop shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday, a detective noticed a large parcel on the floor in the rear of the vehicle, he said.
The cocaine found in the parcel has a value of between $20,000 and $25,000, Henderson said.
