NEWARK &mdash An 18-year-old Newark man has been charged with killing his teenage friend in the city’s West Ward Sunday night, authorities said.
Kristin Best was arrested this morning without incident and charged with aggravated manslaughter, said Anthony Ambrose, chief of detectives for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Ronald Croft, 16, was shot in the head on Lindsley Avenue around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, said Ambrose who described the two as friends. Investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the shooting, Ambrose said.
Best apparently lived a few houses away from the Lindsley Avenue address where Croft was found dead, Ambrose said.
Best was charged with aggravated manslaughter and weapons offenses, said Ambrose, and remains at the Essex County Correctional Facility.
Croft’s death was Newark’s 81st homicide of the year. There were 80 homicides in all of 2009.
