PLAINFIELD — A city taxi driver was shot to death in his cab early this morning, Union County authorities said.
Isidro Leonardo, 44, of Plainfield was found in the driver's seat of his taxi on the 200 block of Spooner Avenue around 5:50 a.m., said Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow.
Romankow said Leonardo, an employee of United Taxi Co. in Plainfield, was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center in New Brunswick in grave condition. He was pronounced dead about six hours later, the prosecutor said.
Authorities are asking anyone with information in the shooting to call county Homicide Task Force Detective Kevin Grimmer at (908) 447-3777 or the Union County Crime Stoppers hotline at (908) 654-TIPS, which is offering up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the person or people responsible for Leonardo's death.
"As we do with every crime, we will vigorously pursue the people responsible for this man's death," said Romankow. "Everyone deserves to live and work in peace and those who seek to disrupt this way of life will be captured and prosecuted."
No suspects have been arrested so far and police did not immediately have a motive, Romankow said.
He said members of the county's Homicide Task Force and the Plainfield Police Department spent today collecting evidence and interviewing residents living near the site of the shooting.
