EAST ORANGE — The man charged with killing one Seton Hall student and injuring four more in a shooting outside an off-campus party is set to appear in court.
Nicholas Welch, 25, of East Orange, will make his first court appearance in Newark on Wednesday. Welch was taken into custody Monday night at his home, just a few doors away from the site of the vicious shooting.
Police say Welch was refused admittance to the party and returned with a gun and started shooting. Nineteen-year-old honors student Jessica Moore was killed and four people were injured.
The suspect was arrested at 9:05 p.m. and led out of his South Clinton Street home in handcuffs and into an unmarked police car.
Welch is being held in the Essex County Correctional Facility in lieu of $2 million bail, said Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert Laurino. He has multiple prior arrests for drug possession, according to records.
Law enforcement agents were searching the home of a second suspect, 19-year-old Marcus Bascus, of East Orange, at the same time they arrested Welch.
Laurino said the teenager will be charged with murder, conspiracy and weapons offenses when he is arrested.
Staff writers Kelly Heyboer, Seth Augenstein and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
