NEW BRUNSWICK — A New Brunswick taxi cab driver thwarted the efforts of a gunman this morning by pulling up beside a nearby police cruiser and yelling that he was being robbed.
As officers rushed from the cruiser, the 19-year-old robber ran from the taxi cab, tossing away a handgun and attempting to flee, only to be arrested after a brief chase, New Brunswick police Lt. J. T. Miller said.
The suspect, Ameer Harris, a city resident, is being held on charges of robbery and weapons possession.
Harris got in the taxi cab on Albany Street shortly after 1 a.m., saying he wanted a ride to Robeson Village housing project on Route 27.
During the ride, Harris, who was sitting in the front seat, pulled out a gun and demanded money, Miller said.
The 28-year-old driver saw the police cruiser on Jersey Avenue and stopped beside it, Miller said.
