NEWARK — Newark police are investigating a navy blue Mercedes they believe could be responsible for a hit-and-run that killed a 5-year-old girl Thursday night.
The vehicle was found at 7th Avenue and North 11th street early this morning, Newark Sgt. Ronald Glover said.
“It’s a suspicious vehicle under investigation,” he said.
The 5-year-old, whose identity was no released Thursday night, died at University Hospital a short time after she was struck at South Orange and Columbia Avenues around 8:30 p.m., according to Detective Hubert Henderson, a Newark Police Department spokesman.
Witnesses told Newark Police that the vehicle involved in the fatal wreck was a blue or black, late-model Mercedes-Benz, which fled the scene after the crash, according to Henderson.
The victim was crossing Columbia Avenue with her 11-year-old sister when the fatal crash occurred, according to Katherine Carter, a spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
The accident happened in front of the girl’s home on Columbia Avenue between South Orange Avenue and Plymouth Street in the city’s West Ward, just blocks from Valisburg Park.
