NORTH ARLINGTON -- The former mayor and his wife were sentenced today in federal court in Newark to one year of probation for attempting to evade income taxes on more than $28,000 they pocketed from his campaign account.

Leonard Kaiser, 61, pleaded guilty in January along with his wife, Barbara Kaiser, 60. They admitted failing to tell the Internal Revenue Service about the payments made to Barbara Kaiser from the fund established to pay for her husband's unsuccessful reelection campaign in 2002.

He is also a former executive director of the Bergen County Utilities Authority and an ex-commissioner of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission.

Under the terms of their plea deal, the Kaisers faced between six and 12 months in prison, according to assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas R. Calcagni. They were also eligible for probation and home confinement.

Judges, however, are not bound by such agreements, and U.S. District Judge Dennis M. Cavanaugh today opted to simply give the Kaisers probation.
