METUCHEN — A woman trying to exchange a bunch of $10 and $20 bills for $100 bills at a Metuchen bank was arrested after police discovered some of the money was counterfeit, and then searched her car and found a duffle bag filled with $72,680 in suspect drug sale proceeds.

Elisa Goddisono, 25, of Asbury Park, was being held today on $250,000 bail at the Middlesex County jail in North Brunswick, charged with money laundering, receiving stolen property and forgery, Officer David Liantonio said.

About 3 p.m. Thursday, the woman brought the $3,000 to a teller at a drive-up window at the TD Bank on Middlesex Avenue in the borough and asked to exchange the cash for $100 bills, Liantonio said.

He said the teller became suspicious and notified police, then checked the cash from the woman and found $70 in counterfeit money.

Officers arrived, arrested the woman for the counterfeit money, then searched the car and found the duffel bag full of cash, Liantonio said.

He said businesses in the borough had discovered several counterfeit bills in the last two weeks, but there no immediate indication those bills were related to this incident.
