PLAINFIELD — The mayor of a Union County community that's recorded six homicides already this year has called an emergency community meeting to try to stem the violence.
Plainfield Mayor Sharon Robinson-Briggs invited city officials, residents and merchants to attend a meeting tonight to brainstorm about ways to deal with the problem.
Much of the violence in the city of 50,000 has been attributed to gang activity.
The Courier-News reports that there have been 11 homicides in Plainfield since September.
The latest victim, a 43-year-old Piscataway resident, died in the hospital after being shot outside a convenience store last week. Additional shootings left two more people injured over the weekend.
