RANDOLPH — A Boonton man has been charged with robbing a Randolph bank last year by threatening to explode a bomb .

Alan Nolan, 38, allegedly entered the Chase bank at the corner of Dover Chester Road and Route 10 West on Nov. 4, wearing a black jacket with a hood, black ski mask and carrying a backpack, court documents show.

"This is a bomb," he told the teller, according to the criminal complaint filed on Wednesday in Superior Court in Morris County. "It’s going to go off in 20 seconds. I want all your 100’s, 50’s and 20’s. Give me all your money. Hurry. Hurry."

He allegedly ran out of the bank with $46,211 in cash.

A Morris County K-9 named Reno followed the robber’s scent through an adjacent empty gas station parking lot to a rear parking lot of a Dairy Queen, according to the complaint, which was signed by Randolph Sgt. William Harzula.

Detectives found a key ring in the parking lot of the Dairy Queen, Harzula said. The ring had two keys and a key fob with a piece of paper that read "Main St. Apt." It also held a bar-coded key card that read "YMCA Character Development."

Detectives determined it belonged to the Lakeland Hills Family YMCA in Mountain Lakes. An employee there told police, the complaint said, the key was assigned to Luke Nolan. Luke’s father was listed as Alan Nolan, who lived at 914 Main St. in Boonton, the complaint said.

While investigators worked the case, Nolan was arrested on Nov. 10 in connection with a 2007 Wharton bank robbery, and his apartment was searched, according to authorities.

On his computer, according to the complaint, detectives found that on the day of the Randolph robbery, Nolan allegedly used Yahoo’s search engine to look up the term "bank opening procedures," "Chase bank opening hours" and visited www.bank-locations.com.

Nolan was charged with robbery and theft in connection with the Chase robbery. Bail was set at $250,000.
