TRENTON — A former New Jersey state senator has had his prison sentenced reduced.
Joseph Coniglio was not present for his resentencing today in Newark federal court, where a judge cut his 30-month sentence to 20 months.
Coniglio has served 16 months and remains at a federal prison camp in Pennsylvania.
He was convicted of extortion and mail fraud nearly two years ago. But a federal appeals court threw out his convictions on the five mail fraud counts this month because of the way the case was presented to the jury.
The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia upheld the 68-year-old's conviction on extortion.
The Paramus Democrat was accused of using his role on the powerful Senate Budget Committee to channel millions of dollars to Hackensack University Medical Center.
