ELIZABETH — One man was killed and another charged with DUI in a single-car crash on the New Jersey Turnpike in Elizabeth early today, after their car ricocheted back and forth across the highway on its roof, State Police said.
The 4:32 a.m. crash shut down the southbound express, or cars only lanes, until 10:20 a.m., said Sgt. Julian Castellanos, a State Police spokesman.
Robert Warner, 24, of Philadelphia, was declared dead at the scene after sustaining head injuries, Castellanos said. Neither Warner nor the driver, Paul Gavin of Williamstown, was wearing a seat belt, Castellanos said. He said no one else was in the car.
Gavin, who turned 25 on Friday, was treated for minor injuries at the University Hospital in Newark, Castellanos said. He said Gavin was charged with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Blood was drawn and toxicology tests are pending.
The 2004 Nissan Maxima was headed south in the car lanes, when it drove onto the inner shoulder and bounced off the guardrail, Castellanos said. He said the car spun across all three lanes onto the outer shoulder, where it hit the guardrail and overturned, then spun back across the highway on its roof, before finally coming to rest straddling the inside shoulder and far left lane.
