NEW BRUNSWICK — New Brunswick police charged an Edison man with the shooting of a Rutgers University student during a drug deal that went bad in the city.
New Brunswick and Edison police arrested Jihad Davis, 20, at his home in Edison about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, New Brunswick police Lt. J.T. Miller said.
He said Davis was charged with robbery, aggravated assault, and weapons possession.
Police said a 21-year-old student was shot in the ankle about 10:40 p.m. Tuesday on the 100 block of Louis Street in the city. Authorities said the shooting occurred during a drug transaction that "went bad."
The student was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for treatment of the wound, which was not life-threatening, police said.
They said the case is still under investigation and no drug charges have been filed.
Davis is being held at the Middlesex County jail in North Brunswick.
