MENDHAM TOWNSHIP — New Jersey's consumer affairs agency has sued a Mendham-based work-at-home firm, claiming it defrauded residents through offers to earn thousands of dollars a week by stuffing envelopes or assembling booklets.
The lawsuit filed today in state Superior Court in Morris County claims 40-year-old David S. Brookman and his company, Capital Enterprises, took registration fees from consumers, then required additional undisclosed payments and fees. The suit is part of a national crackdown against work-at-home scams.
The suit seeks civil penalties against Brookman and his firm. It also wants them to pay restitution and comply with consumer protection laws.
A telephone message left Brookman was not immediately returned. Capital Enterprises does business as Maxwell Scott Enterprises, Maxwell Scott, David Gates Enterprises and Warner Daniel.
