Nelson OteroBERGEN COUNTY — Two men were arrested early this morning on multiple charges of armed robbery and the attempted murder of a Wayne police officer, the Bergen County Prosecutor's office announced today.
Nelson Otero, 46, of Fort Lee, and Maxcime Cagen, 46, of Floral Park, N.Y., are accused in more than a dozen armed robberies of gas stations, liquor stores and convenience stores in multiple counties, said the statement from Bergen County Prosecutor's John L. Molinelli.
Passaic and Bergen County SWAT teams arrested Otero and Cagen, both of whom have prior convictions, in Palisades Park at about 12:30 a.m., authorities said.
Cagen, police said, was found carrying a .9-mm semi-automatic weapon, an assortment of ammunition, a ballistic vest.
A search of Otero's residence in New York led to the seizure of .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun, drug paraphernelia and proceeds from the robberies, authorities said.
New York City Police Department also had a warrant for Cagen, in connection a Queens killing. No further details were available on the warrant.
Bergen County set bail at $750,000 for each suspect. Passaic County also is expected to set bail.
Details on the shooting of the Wayne police officer was not available tonight.
