NEW BRUNSWICK — A New Brunswick police sergeant was charged today with doing side security jobs for private companies while he was supposed to be working for the city.
Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said Sgt. Victor DeFilippo, 42, is charged with one count of theft by deception for accepting extra work between Jan. 5, 2009 and July 16, 2010.
Kaplan said DeFilippo, who joined the city police department in 1990, resigned Dec. 17, 2010 after the police department learned he was working extra jobs while on duty. The department launched its own investigation and notified the county prosecutor's office which assisted, he said.
The prosecutor said police determined DeFilippo worked on various occasions for a number of companies, including Public Service Electric & Gas Co. (PSE&G), Verizon and Johnson & Johnson. He said the former officer performed security duties and traffic control on streets where road work and utility repairs were being done.
DeFilippo appeared this morning before Superior Court Judge Frederick De Vesa, where he pleaded not guilty and was released on his own recognizance. His next court date is April 8.
