TOMS RIVER — A Toms River man pleaded guilty today to bank robbery, saying he committed nine heists in Ocean, Monmouth and Burlington counties, authorities said. He hit two of the banks twice, authorities said.
Scott Mackay, 47, told U.S. District Judge Joel A. Pisano in Trenton that he handed notes to tellers during the robberies, demanding money and saying he was armed, authorities said.
He admitted carrying a gun during the holdups in Toms River, Willingboro, Brick, Manalapan and other towns, authorities said.
The money stolen totaled more than $28,000.
Mackay was arrested after authorities circulated a photograph of him taken during
a robbery at a Wachovia Bank in Manalapan. Police officers in Guttenberg recognized him and called the FBI, authorities said.
He faces up to 20 years in prison for each count of bank robbery.
