NEWARK — An Essex County Sheriff’s Officer arrested a man for allegedly stealing an SUV in Newark this morning after having threatened the driver with a brick, authorities said.
The man, Nigel Lynch, 42, was arrested at 12:30 p.m., after the stolen 2006 Dodge Durango’s anti-theft device triggered a signal as it passed West Market Street, according to the office of Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura.
Sheriff’s Officer Dennis Kihlberg pulled the vehicle over on the 200 block of West Market Street, and Lynch and a passenger were arrested.
Authorities said that two hours earlier, Lynch had threatened the Durango’s driver with a large brick outside on the 100 block of Stuyvesant Avenue. The woman fled and Lynch allegedly drove off with the vehicle.
Lynch was charged with carjacking, receiving stolen property and giving a false name to the arresting officer.
The passenger, Stephen Johnson, 48, was charged with receiving stolen property. He also had an open warrant for a burglary arrest in Newark.
