ROXBURY — The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office is seeking to take ownership of $24,000 in cash seized from two upstate New York men who face drug charges following their arrest on Route 80 in Roxbury on Oct. 12.
A lawsuit filed in Superior Court in Morristown says Billy Joe Blackman, 34, of Binghamton, and Adam Randesi, 26, of Endicott, intended to use the money to purchase illegal drugs or had gotten it from the sale of drugs. The suit also seeks to take the 2001 Acura Blackman drove that night.
Employment records provided by Blackman showed he had made only $9,866 during the previous year, according to Assistant Prosecutor Anthony Scibetta.
Roxbury police stopped Blackman’s car after he was seen traveling with the driver’s side head lamp not lit and was driving between 76 and 80 mph in a 65-mph zone, according to the suit. The money was found in a backpack during a search of the car after a police officer smelled marijuana.
Blackman was charged with possession of marijuana, weapons possession and transporting property derived from criminal activity. Randesi was charged with marijuana possession.
The pair also face drug charges in New York, according to the suit. Searches in December found a half-pound of marijuana and $12,000 in cash in Blackman’s residence; and eight pounds of marijuana, 200 Oxycotin tablets and a total of $48,000 in cash in Randesi’s residence and vehicle, according to Scibetta.
