SPOTSWOOD — A 58-year-old Spotswood High School math teacher has been charged with sending sexually explicit text messages to a student, authorities announced today.

Thomas Ivan, who resides in the Somerset section of Franklin Township, was arrested Friday and charged with endangering the welfare of a child, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said.

Ivan was released on his own recognizance after his arrest. He also was told he could not have contact with the 17-year-old victim and is not permitted to return to the school, Kaplan said.

Ivan was charged after Detective Les Genovese of the Spotswood Police Department and county Investigator Andreea Capraru determined he exchanged sexually explicit text messages with the student between Dec. 14 and Dec. 17, Kaplan said. Friends of the victim notified school authorities.

Ivan has been teaching at the high school since January 2003.
