MOUNT OLIVE — A Boonton man accused of identity theft led police on an hour-long manhunt Friday when he fled a Toys "R" Us warehouse where he worked in an attempt to escape.
Mount Olive police officers wanted to question Carlos Amartinez, 35, because the Social Security Office alleged he had opened a cell phone account using someone else's social security number, according to officer Russ Hatzel.
Cpl. Mark Carlstrom went to the Toys "R" Us in Flanders to interview Amartinez. But he fled the building before he could be questioned, Hatzel said.
With the assistance of the Morris County Sheriff’s K-9 unit and other Mount Olive officers, Amartinez was found at a 7-Eleven less than one mile away, Hatzel said.
Amartinez was charged with identity theft, impersonation and eluding the police.
He was transported to the Morris County jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency was notified and is conducting a separate investigation.
