MONMOUTH COUNTY— A New Jersey man has been sentenced to 26 months in federal prison for beating a debtor to collect an illegal loan.
Thirty-three-year-old Anthony Cariello of East Brunswick pleaded guilty in June to an extortion conspiracy charge. He was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Trenton.
Prosecutors say Cariello went to Monmouth County in March 2006 to collect repayment of a loan. When the debtor refused to pay, Cariello and another man kicked and beat him.
The debtor then gave Cariello approximately $900 in cash, and soon made another cash payment of approximately $1,200.
Cariello's accomplice, James LaForte Jr. of Staten Island, N.Y., was sentenced in April to three years in prison.
