NEW YORK — A New Jersey man has pleaded guilty to stealing $1.7 million in vehicle registration fees he collected on behalf of New York state.

Albany County District Attorney David Soares says 58-year-old Glenn Fox of Marlboro kept the money he took in between August and October 2009 after his business had financial problems.

The fees from dealerships in New York City were supposed to be forwarded to the state Department of Motor Vehicles. DMV officials investigated and referred the case to prosecutors after discovering Fox had stopped making the payments.

Soares says today that Fox pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree grand larceny. He faces five to 15 years in state prison when he's sentenced in December and must return the stolen money to the state.
