BOONTON TOWNSHIP — An 18-year-old man who played football at Mountain Lakes High School was indicted today for allegedly stealing jewelry from the home of his former girlfriend and killing the family dog.
Donovan Allieri of Boonton Township was indicted by a Morris County grand jury on two counts of theft and one count each of burglary, animal cruelty, use of a juvenile to commit a crime and receiving stolen property.
The thefts of jewelry “valued at more than $500 but less than $75,000” occurred on various dates in June 2010 in Boonton Township, according to the indictment. The burglary and animal cruelty charges both resulted from incidents on June 6, the indictment says.
Cliff Weininger, the lawyer representing the family of Allieri’s 16-year-old ex-girlfriend, has said Allieri entered the family home with a key used for emergency access and stole jewelry. The lawyer also said Allieri removed the family dog, a 9-year-old dachshund, from a cage, and beat it against the wall and floor.
Allieri’s attorney, Marcy McMann, has disputed the charges and said the dog bit Allieri and died the next day.
