HILLSBOROUGH — A Hillsborough woman who was the treasurer for a local school group pleaded guilty today to taking more than $17,000 from the organization’s coffers, authorities said.
Vicki Elkins, 46, of Downbury Court appeared before Superior Court Judge John Pursel in Somerville and pleaded guilty to third-degree theft for the incidents that occurred between Sept. 5, 2008, and Oct. 15, 2009.
As part of the deal struck between Somerset County Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Chirichella and public defender Robert Gaynor, the state offered probation with 50 hours of community service. She must make full restitution by the time she is sentenced, said Acting Somerset County Prosecutor A. Peter DeMarco Jr.
Elkins was elected treasurer of the Hillsborough Middle School Home and School Association in June 2008, DeMarco has said. She started writing checks to herself in September of that year and took $17,448 from the organization.
