SANDYSTON — Four girls were injured when their car drove off a road at Stokes State Forest in Sussex County after an afternoon of drinking at the 15,482-acre state park, a spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection said today.
The 17-year-old driver of the car, an Andover Township resident, was charged with driving while intoxicated following the crash, said DEP spokesman Larry Ragonese.
The accident occurred when the girl was driving a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta on Spur Road, off Sunrise Mountain Road, and lost control of the car and rolled down a 2-foot embankment at about 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The car then struck a boulder, rolled over and caught fire. All four girls escaped the car before it became fully engulfed in flames, said Ragonese.
After the crash, one of the girls called her mother who contacted police, he said.
"They had been drinking at Stokes ... it’s amazing they were able to walk away from the car," said Ragonese.
The driver and her three passengers, 18-year-old Victoria Caso of Andover Township and two other girls, ages 16 and 17, were all charged with underage possession of alcohol.
The driver was additionally charged with having too many passengers in her car while driving with a provisional license and inattentive driving.
The four girls suffered minor injuries in the accident and were taken to area hospitals.
