Remy Gonzalez, the brother-in-law of the “Cake Boss” Buddy Valastro, and a main figure in the TLC channel television show based on Hoboken's Carlos Bakery has been arrested on charges he sexually-assaulting a teenager, authorities said.
Remegio Gonzalez, 32, of East Hanover, was arrested Aug. 17 and allegedly admitted to witnesses committing assaults that occurred in March in East Hanover and Florham Park, according to an arrest affidavit filed in Superior Court in Morristown.
Gonzalez is charged in both towns with first- and third-degreee aggravated sexual assault, second degree sex assault, third-degree endangering and fourth-degree criminal-sexual contact.
He is being held in the Morris County jail in lieu of $300,000 bail.
On Aug. 17, detectives from the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office met with two witnesses, who said the victim claimed to have been sexually assaulted by Gonzalez, the affidavit said.
The witnesses, whose identities were not disclosed, had confronted Gonzalez on Aug. 13, and he initially denied sexually assaulting the teen. But during a later conversation that day, the witnesses said they were going to take the teen to a doctor, who would have to contact police if anything was found, and it was then that Gonzalez “began to cry and admitted (to the witness) that he had engaged in acts" of sexual assault, the affidavit states.
The victim told police on Aug. 17 that the incidents occurred once in East Hanover and once in Florham Park, and that Gonzalez told the teen not to tell anyone what had happened, the affidavit says.
One of the witnesses also recorded a phone call with Gonzalez on Aug. 17. During that call, the witness said that he/she “could not believe this was going on. You broke our hearts,” to which Gonzalez replied, “I know, I know I did,” according to the affidavit.
Also during this call, Gonzalez acknowledged having previously admitted on Aug. 13 that he assaulted the teen, but now said he only touched the teen’s intimate areas, and that he “made a mistake,” “wanted to get help” and “forget about it,” the affidavit says.
When contacted by police, Gonzalez exercised his right to retain an attorney and made no statement to law-enforcement authorities, the court document says.
Gonzalez, who is a brother-in-law of “Cake Boss” Buddy Valastro, has appeared as a cake decorator on that show about Valastro’s bakery in Hoboken, Carlo’s City Hall Bake Shop.
